The Hungry Games: Day 2

Eerily quiet.  Aside from a couple of warning shots, everyone seemed to spend most of their time coming to terms with their situation.  There is one guy that seems to be thriving.  I call him Abe.  Within the first day, Abe built himself a shelter in a cave and surrounded his territory with traps and noise makers.  Today, he caught himself some fish at the ravine and foraged for some nuts and herbs.  Already he is looking much healthier than he did when we first brought him in.  I think we have a front runner.

The Hungry Games: Day 1

I release an adult Jaguar into the compound and broadcast sounds of wounded gazelles from each contestant's neck device…

 

Upon releasing the jaguar, a brave hobo launches out of the bushes to throw a spear at it.  Caught by surprise, the jaguar had no time to defend.   The spear lands….in the dirt, 3 feet from the hobo.  He is a hungry hobo after all and the throw was feeble at best.

If a jaguar could have ever been mistaken for smirking, this was moment.  Without sound, the fierce animal tears through the man’s belly like a knife through soft cheese.  The man’s only response was a guttural screech as the animal drags him into the bushes and through the compound.  A sudden crunch of bone silences the man.  The first death.  What a wonderfully brave and gutsy (no pun intended) move by a hobo.  His name will go down in honor….What was it again?

Upon devouring the man, our jaguar climbs a tree to find a resting place.  This time a smarter hobo was waiting.  3 flashes of a pistol did the job. 

Now someone has jaguar meat and skin.  What an excellent first day.

The Hungry Games: Setting

Before entering the games, every hobo is given these instructions:

"There are 60 of you total.  In one year, there will be 1 left.  You must combat your surroundings and each other to ensure that you become that 1.  There are cameras everywhere for us to observe your journey.  Around your neck is a tracking device for us to listen in on your progress.  Also embedded in this device is a very strong explosive.  Any attempt to remove this device, escape the compounds, or cheat the game will be followed quickly with the detonation of this device.  

 

To encourage progress, if there isn't an average of 1 death per 6 days, we will detonate a random device to compensate.

Throughout the year, supplies, weapons, and sometimes deadly animals will be released into the games.

Session One Recap

Downtime

  • Winter Wave agrees to join the Crew after a meeting at the clubhouse.
  • The Crew agrees to park the truck loaded with shotguns somewhere on the premises of their clubhouse.  
  • The Crew makes a deal with the leader of the Fronts, Amy Steur.  In exchange for 100 shotguns, they will be allowed usage of Ida Dufreyn, a street doctor in the CAS Sector.
  • Winter Wave spends time working on extracting her girlfriend from the UK and reducing the team's heat.
  • The rest of the Crew focus on healing up after their damaging encounter with the Godz gangers.

Score

  • The Crew agrees to smuggle 5 Aztlan citizens and two of their pets into Denver city limits
  • A pair of interceptor drones are rendered toothless after Trash Heap sends a couple Great Power sprites to deal with them
  • Trash Heap doctors the flight records to indicate that their T-Bird is arriving from Atlanta so that the Crew can land at Lowry Airport.  
  • Winter Wave challenges Bianca to a sparring match.  Winter Waves wins but hurts her hip in the process.
  • Winter Wave suffers a damaged cyberarm trying to pet one of the barghests.

Results

  • Payoff: +6 Cred for successful score
  • Rep: +6
  • Heat: +3
  • Additional gains: Claimed Street Doc, mysterious cargo
  • Faction changes: +1 with the Fronts, -1 with the Godz

Session Zero Recap

The fledgling smugglers, on their first job, avoid getting screwed over by their client, Sappho.  But a fight breaks out between the smugglers and a gang of six Godz members.

  • Charlie convinces Sappho to pay up, using a frag grenade as a bargaining tool.  Kobe miscalculates the length of the timer and the grenade goes off while he is holding it.  The blast doesn't kill him but it does take him out of the action temporarily.
  • Crimson uses her worker drones to take out two of the panicked Godz gangers.  The drones are tied up keeping the gangers subdued.
  • Trash Heap uses her technomancer powers to disable all of the Godz shotguns.  This causes two of them to flee the scene, but the remaining two target Kobe with their fists.
  • Crimson and Trash Heap engage the Godz members in hand-to-hand combat, but struggle against the well-trained gangers, taing significant injuries.
  • Kobe makes a desperate move to leap over a ganger while depositing a live grenade into the ganger's hoodie.  The dangerous maneuver works and the ganger dies from shrapnel to the back of his head.
  • Crimson makes another attempt at taking down the last ganger, but a straight kick to the chest from the ganger keeps her at bay by breaking some of her ribs.
  • Kobe, still recovering from a concussion, manages to hold down the last ganger, to allow his crew to subdue the final ganger.

Results

  • Payoff: 6 Cred for delivery of the shipment.  1 Cred for retrieval of the Godz gangers
  • Rep: 4 (lowered to 2 during downtime)
  • Heat: 3 (lowered to 1 during downtime)
  • Additional gains: 500 unassembled T-250 Defiance Shotguns
  • Crew XP: 7

A blog for your campaign

Wondering how to get started? Here are a few tips:

1. Invite your players

Invite them with either their email address or their Obsidian Portal username.

2. Edit your home page

Make a few changes to the home page and give people an idea of what your campaign is about. That will let people know you’re serious and not just playing with the system.

3. Choose a theme

If you want to set a specific mood for your campaign, we have several backgrounds to choose from. Accentuate it by creating a top banner image.

4. Create some NPCs

Characters form the core of every campaign, so take a few minutes to list out the major NPCs in your campaign.

A quick tip: The “+” icon in the top right of every section is how to add a new item, whether it’s a new character or adventure log post, or anything else.

5. Write your first Adventure Log post

The adventure log is where you list the sessions and adventures your party has been on, but for now, we suggest doing a very light “story so far” post. Just give a brief overview of what the party has done up to this point. After each future session, create a new post detailing that night’s adventures.

One final tip: Don’t stress about making your Obsidian Portal campaign look perfect. Instead, just make it work for you and your group. If everyone is having fun, then you’re using Obsidian Portal exactly as it was designed, even if your adventure log isn’t always up to date or your characters don’t all have portrait pictures.
